John Coltrane's birthday. I hadn't realised. Just last Friday I went to the record store and bought a bunch of his albums. It was a great feeling walking down the street with a stack of John Coltrane under my arm, hard to describe. Like I was carrying something powerful and precious around. I don't get that feeling from an ipod. What an amazing artist.

Here's a spot illustration I did recently of "Papa" Hemmingway. Looks a little more like Papa Smurf to me but it was fun to do. I always liked For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Wish I could draw like this! For a long while I've been checking Todays Inspiration for exactly that. Makes me wish I had a time-machine.

Hello. Been listening to some jazz a lot lately, seems to fit the summer days/evenings. I read a book on Be-Bop a few years ago. There was one part of it where the writer was describing the musicians at the time and explaining how far-out they were. He called them a bunch of "12th century monks and street corner witchdoctors." That line always stuck in my head, so I made this the other day. With apologies and respect to Charles Mingus, Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera.

Some t-shirts I did a little while back are now out at Beams here in Japan. Not really sure my drawings are suited to t-shirts.

Went to see Kelly Joe Phelps play in Osaka the other night. It was great to see him play live, very different from the recordings, puts your head in a nice place. He even made time after the show to talk to everybody. It's not everyday you meet someone from your record collection. A very humble and talented guy, it was a true honour. Thanks for the ticket MB!
