Hope all's well in your part of the world.
Things are great here at this end.
Just coming through the rainy season here in Japan.
Recently I did some illustration work for
Sound & Recording magazine up in Tokyo,
as well as some collaboration work with Die from Jazzy Sport.
I also got to do some sketches for a Wax Poetics project.
Wax Poetics gave me my first real editorial illustration job,
so I was really happy to have had a chance to do
some more work for them.
Everyone that works there is really passionate about
what they do, which is why the magazine always turns out so well.
I'm really proud to have had work there.

Recently I did some spot illustrations for Esquire magazine.
It was the first time I've ever done anything fashion related.
It was a guide on the "right" cut of a suit. Here's how it turned
out.

"Freedom Principle: The Jazz Life & Beyond" is an exhibition
of art work
from Straight No Chaser magazine held at the Illustration Gallery
in Stroud, England.
I've been into SNC magazine since I was in high school, so it was an honour
to have been able to contribute to the magazine and the exhibition.

Many thanks to Oliver Jelf for organising it, I really appreciate the opportunity.
If you're in that neck of the woods, please check it out.
It runs until June 2nd.

I missed the boat with writing a Christmas message,
but hope you had a good one all the same.
It's a real shame about the passing of Mr. Brown.

Here is the big change we had coming.
Welcome to the world, Henry!
He's a really good boy, we love him dearly.

Wax Poetics #19 is out, always a quality magazine.
I did a small piece for an interview with percussionist
Edwin Bonilla.
Still having fun here in Japan, big changes coming soon!

Here is a photo of some artwork I received
in the mail a few weeks ago from Ian Johnson.
If you have a chance, please do yourself
a favour and check out his work, some great stuff.

This next one is photo of a display in a record store
here in Japan for the Japonicans album.
I worked on the cover with Die from Jazzy Sport,
this was the first time I've ever had a display made
for something I'd worked on, so I was pretty happy
to see it. It was a good feeling.

I've been working on a few other illustration
projects lately, hope to post them soon.
In the meantime, here is some excellent design work
to check out, from the talented Micke.Thorsby,

Here comes Autumn...

A couple of newish illustrations up. The Bluebird picture came
about pretty quickly. The Listen to the Lion sketch was
inspired by the Van Morrison song of the same name.
It's on the Saint Dominic's Preview album. I like it all, but the
second half of that albumin particular, is great!

I love summer in Japan! Hope you are having a good time in your part of
the world.
A couple of weeks ago I did an editorial piece for The Fretboard Journal. It was a lot of fun to work on, many thanks to Patrick for hooking it
up. The issue my piece will be in should be out in October. It's a great
magazine, if you get a chance please take a peek.
I also worked on an album cover for a ska band up in Tokyo called
The Japonicans. It was a collaboration between me and Die, the man behind the designs at Jazzy Sport. It will be out a little later this month, I'll be sure to put it up on the site.
A while ago I posted a quick painting that was based on a sketch done after a holiday in New York a few years back. It'd be nice to visit again someday.
And last but not least, if you have a chance, please check out the great
designs of the team at Wadada. I've been a fan of their design for a long time, I love their t shirts!
Take it easy,
B

A couple of new links to check out in the links section.
The design and music of the talented Mr. David Haire.
In drawing news I did a small piece for RE:UP magazine recently, and have
a few other projects on the go. A couple of interesting things on the horizon
too, but I'm trying not to count my chickens before they hatch.

Here's a super rough sketch from my sketchbook.
At the moment I'm working on turning it into a finished illustration,
so I thought it might be interesting to show a before and after sketch.
If it turns out OK, I'll be sure to put up the finished picture.
Fingers crossed...
I also put up a few new links the other day.
Jazzy Sport is a great record store up in Tokyo.
Die, their designer does some great work
and is one of the nicest people you could hope to meet.

Life is good.
Here's a picture of a picture I did a while ago of the amazing
Mr. Jimmy McGriff. He was kind enough to sign it for me. If you haven't
heard his music, please give youself a treat, it'll definitely put a bounce
in your step. Many thanks to Matt Rogers for setting it all up!
